FNAF: Night-by-Night Survival Guide
A night-by-night breakdown of Five Nights at Freddy's: when each animatronic activates, how much power you can afford to spend, and the door-check rhythm that survives night 5.
The Core Loop
Five Nights at Freddy's traps you in a security office with two doors, two hall lights, a camera tablet, and a power meter that drains whenever any of those are in use. Your job is to survive from midnight to 6 AM (about 8 minutes and 30 seconds of real time) without being caught by the four animatronics wandering the pizzeria. The game's entire strategy is power management: you have just enough power to survive the night if you spend it perfectly, and not one watt more.
The Four Animatronics
Bonnie (purple rabbit) — the most active animatronic. Bonnie approaches from the left side. He moves frequently and reaches your door faster than any other character. He is the primary threat on every night.
Chica (yellow chicken) — approaches from the right side. Chica is slightly slower than Bonnie but is more likely to "stall" at your door, draining power if you keep it closed too long.
Freddy (brown bear) — the title character and the most dangerous. Freddy approaches from the right side, behind Chica. Freddy only moves when he is not being watched on camera, which means checking the camera *too much* annoys him and checking it *too little* lets him sneak up. Freddy does not appear at your door light — by the time you hear his laugh, he is already inside.
Foxy (red fox) — lives in Pirate Cove. Foxy does not approach the same way as the others; instead, he becomes active when you neglect the cameras for too long, then sprints down the left hall. If he reaches your door, he costs you a flat 5% of your power (one door slam) — manageable on early nights, fatal on later ones.
General Strategy: The Door-Check Rhythm
The fundamental rhythm of FNAF is:
1. Lower the camera tablet. 2. Tap the left hall light. If Bonnie is there, shut the left door. If not, leave it open. 3. Tap the right hall light. If Chica is there, shut the right door. If not, leave it open. 4. Raise the camera tablet. Check Pirate Cove (Camera 1C) to keep Foxy in his cove. Briefly check the Show Stage (Camera 1A) to confirm Freddy's position. 5. Lower the tablet. Repeat.
This rhythm takes about 4 seconds per cycle and burns minimal power. The single biggest power-waster is leaving a door closed when no animatronic is there — never do this. Doors are a *response* to a threat, not a precaution.
Night 1: The Tutorial Night
Night 1 is forgiving. Bonnie and Chica move slowly, Foxy rarely activates, and Freddy does not move at all. Use this night to practice the door-check rhythm without pressure. Your goal is to end Night 1 with at least 40% power remaining — if you cannot, your rhythm is too slow or you are leaving doors closed too long.
Night 2: Foxy Wakes Up
Night 2 is when Foxy starts moving. The fix is simple: check Camera 1C (Pirate Cove) once every two door-check cycles. If the "Sorry! Out of Order" sign is still up, Foxy is in his cove. If the curtain is open and Foxy is gone, *immediately* shut the left door — Foxy is on his way and will reach you in about 5 seconds.
Night 3: The Difficulty Spike
Night 3 is the first real difficulty spike. Bonnie and Chica become aggressive, and Freddy begins to move. The change you need to make is camera economy: every camera raise costs power, and you can no longer afford to check the cameras after every door-check. Switch to a rhythm of "two door-checks, one camera check". Listen for audio cues — Freddy's laugh means he has moved, and you should check the Show Stage to confirm his new position.
Night 4: The Squeeze
Night 4 is where most players die. Power drain accelerates, Foxy attacks more frequently, and Freddy starts skipping stages. The critical realization is that you cannot afford to keep both doors closed simultaneously. If Bonnie is at the left and Chica is at the right, you have to choose: shut one door, take a calculated risk on the other. The safer choice is always to shut the door for the animatronic that just arrived (they will leave after a few seconds) and trust that the other one will also leave before reaching you.
Night 5: Survival Mode
Night 5 is brutal. Freddy is fully active, Foxy attacks every 15-20 seconds if you neglect him, and your power budget is razor-thin. The strategy that wins Night 5 is preemptive minimalism:
- Check cameras only when you hear an audio cue.
- Use door lights, not doors, as your primary information source.
- If an animatronic is at the door, shut the door and wait exactly 3 seconds, then open it and re-check the light. Most animatronics leave after 3-5 seconds.
If you reach 6 AM with even 1% power remaining, you have won. If your power runs out before 5 AM, you will likely die (the Office goes dark, Freddy appears in the doorway, and you have a small window to survive until 6 AM — but only if he plays his music box).
Common Mistakes
Closing both doors as a precaution. This is the single biggest power-waster. Doors are a response, not a precaution.
Checking the cameras too often. Every camera raise costs about 1% power. On a tight night, you can afford maybe 30 camera checks total.
Panic-closing the door when Foxy runs. Foxy's sprint takes 5 seconds. You have time to close the door calmly. Panicking causes you to leave the door closed too long.
Forgetting Freddy does not appear at the door light. Freddy's tell is his laugh, not his silhouette. If you hear the laugh and have not seen Freddy in a few camera checks, he has moved.
Summary
- Night 1: Practice the door-check rhythm; end with 40%+ power.
- Night 2: Check Pirate Cove every other cycle to keep Foxy contained.
- Night 3: Switch to "two door-checks, one camera check" for economy.
- Night 4: Pick one door to trust; you cannot afford both closed.
- Night 5: Minimum cameras, door-lights as primary info, 3-second door holds.
FNAF is a power-budget puzzle disguised as a horror game. The scares fade once you have a rhythm; what remains is a tight, fair survival loop that rewards pattern recognition over reflexes.
